Aggressive Meningioma: Identification, Modeling and Personalized Treatment

Menin­giomas are the most fre­quent intracra­nial and spinal tumors. Due to the close prox­im­i­ty to the cen­tral ner­vous sys­tem (CNS), these tumors can evoke a vari­ety of neu­ro­log­i­cal symp­toms. Menin­giomas are typ­i­cal­ly treat­ed by sur­gi­cal removal, yet about 15% of menin­giomas recur are require addi­tion­al treat­ment. These recur­ring menin­giomas are termed “aggres­sive menin­giomas” and include both benign and malig­nant tumors.

Cur­rent­ly there are no estab­lished and rou­tine­ly applied bio­mark­ers to test and pre­dict which patients are at risk for recur­rence. This makes it dif­fi­cult to iden­ti­fy which patients will need more inten­sive fol­low-up care or addi­tion­al treat­ments such as radiotherapy.

We aim to significantly improve the care for patients with aggressive meningiomas.
